Impounded in 1940, hiwassee was orignally known as Fowler Bend. The name was later changed to reflect the name of the river on which it is located.

The 6090-acre lake is located in Cherokee County, North Carolina, The lake is 22 miles long, has over 163 miles of shoreline, approximately 7 percent of it which has development of some from. It collects water from 968 square-miles watershed.

In addition to power generation, the lake was also designed as a coponent of TVA's integrated regional flood control system, which account for the fluctuation of water levels.

The targeted summer lake elevation rangers between 1515 and 1521 feet. The January 1 target level is elevation of 1460. TVA's target is to recreational water levels as outline in the 1990 Lake Improvement Plan by June 1 and hold that level for recreation use until August 1, barring emergencies.

TVA owns rights in one from or another up to the 1532 elevation, which means the agency must review and approve in advance any shoreline alteration or construction activities below that elevation. This review process ensures that nothing occurs in or around the lake that will compromise the agency's ability to meet its legal obligations ans objectives in managing the river system.
