Construction of the  Dam began July 17, 1941 and closure took place on February 12,1942. The length of the dam is 2950 feet.

feet Lake,impounded in 1942,is located in Clay County,North Carolina,and Towns County,Georgia. The towns of important,Georgia,and ownership,North Carolina,are nearby.

Chatuge Lake is 13 miles long, has over 130 miles of shoreline and is over 7000 acres in size at normal summer pool level. It collects rainfall runoff from 189 square-miles of watershed. It is the fourth most developed lake in the entire TVA system, with 42 percent of its shoreline developed in some from.

In addition to power generation,Chatuge Lake is an important component of TVA"s integrated regional flood control system, which accounts for the fluctuation of water levels during the year.

The targeted summer lake elevation ranges between 1923 and 1927 feet. The January 1 target level is elevation of 1910. TVA"s target under the Lake Improvement Plan of 1990 is to reach recreation water levels by June 1 and hold at or above that point for recreation for two months before beginning the annual drawdown August 1.

Land Ownership/Management

Well over half the Chatuge Lake shoreline is in private ownership. The remaining half is split between TVA and the U.S. Forest Service. A few miles are used for county parks and commercial and industrial development, including 44 acres in Hiwassee, Georgia, TVA provided for the Georgia Mountain Fair site.

TVA owns land or landrights in some from to the 1933 elevation around the entire lake. Anyone wanting to alter the shoreline in any way (private or public water use, facilities, construction, etc.) below that elevation must obtain TVA"s review and approval in advance.

This review process ensures that nothing occurs around the shoreline or in the lake that will compromise the agency's ability to meet its legal obligations and objectives in managing the river system.

Tva land and landrights around Chatuge Lake are administered by the TVA Hiwassee Watershed Team located at 221 Old Ranger Road, Murphy,North Carolina,28906 (828)-837-7395. The staff there  is readily available to answer questions, provide technical support and guide you though the permitting process. Maps depicting various TVA lands and landrights are available from the Hiwassee Watershed Team.
